Three options exist for ordering customized license plates:

Online Order

Customized plates can be ordered online only if you don’t have disabilities that need the Universal Symbol of Access. You can order customized plates online by fulfilling the demands given below:

·         A vehicle registration from New York State issued in a motorcycle, passenger, or commercial registration class with more than 60 days validity is needed.

·         Your current mailing address must be on the vehicle registration record.

·         In the vehicle registration record, your name must be similar to your current name in case of any changes.

·         Your current plate number, 3-letter registration class code, and your last name’s first three letters are required.

·         For verification, you need to submit a credit card acceptable by DMV in combination with a valid email address.

Email or Fax Order

After checking the availability of your plate number, you can order online using email or call. You can download the application form from the internet and complete it for the final submission. All procedure is completed online, and then mail the application to the address given on the form.

You can pay the fee using a check or money order acceptable by DMV. If you use the fax option, you can complete the form and fax along with a credit card authorization on the given number. Moreover, if you are planning to move to Nevada within the next 60 days, you can still order plates.

The DMV staff will review your order, and if they find everything perfect, your plates will be approved. Then plates will be mailed to the DMV office as per your pick-up feasibility.  

In-Person Order

In-person ordering is another option to register your vehicle. You can renew the registration of your vehicle at the DMV office. Using the customized plate search option, you can choose any plate style in advance. A temporary movement permit will be issued for your vehicle, and you will get new plates through the mail.

Time to Get New Plates and Registration

• After ten days of the confirmation of your license plates, you will get a new registration file consist of a current plate number with a new combination of the plate.
• For the custom plates, you will have to wait a minimum of six weeks.
• You will get new registration documents in the mail different from custom plates.

What Should You Do with Current Vehicle Plates after Getting New Plates

Always protect your vehicle against any fraud. For this, you must protect current vehicle plates by marking each plate with a permanent ink pen. Avoid throwing both vehicle plates in the garbage on the same day.

Receiving Your Plates

You should approve customized license plates from the DMV staff. Also, the DMV staff is responsible for manufacturing and shipping. In case of application rejection, you will get notified and refunded later on. The delivery of your refunded payment can take up to 6-8 weeks.

You can visit the DMV office after getting notified to check your plates. Don’t forget to pick up your plates as soon as possible. Within 60 days of notification, you must receive your customized license plates. If not received within 60 days, plates will be smashed.
